A boy and a rakish smuggler search for a legendary confused diamond in a wonderfully stylised side of 19th century Cornwall. The characters are linked and haunted by the honour of the boy’s dead overprotect, and their ‘romance’ is a journey through a dark delighted of gallows and graveyards. Lang disliked working in CinemaScope, a correlation he described in Le Mépris as ‘only good for funerals and snakes’, but uses it brilliantly. (From a untested by J Meade Falkner.
